Derek has been an active participant in the Charlottesville music community since he started his graduate studies in 2010 at the University of Virginia. Before UVA, Derek participated in concert band and jazz programs at New Trier High School in Winnetka, IL, at Flint Hill School in Oakton, VA, and continued his studies in jazz performance at Trinity College in Hartford, CT. Currently, Derek finds time between meetings to both spend time weekly at the Compass Academy teaching the fundamentals of learning and appreciating music, while also playing with Steve and the Instigators at venues around town, providing lead guitar, mandolin, and backing vocals. Derek does play the occasional solo gig around town, and lives in Crozet with his wife and three daughters.
