Compass Academy

About Compass Academy Homeschool Co-Op

Compass Academy is a nature-based homeschool cooperative program for children ages 6-11, hosted by The Compass Center Foundation. We offer a variety of programs throughout the week including afternoon classes, an afternoon garden program, and a daytime program.

The Compass Academy campus is integrated into the Compass Center Foundation homestead—located on and deeply integrated with—Henley’s Orchard, a 1000-acre farm and orchard in Crozet, Virginia.

Our Curriculum

Because the homestead and farm are both our primary educators and our classrooms; the natural rhythms spark the children’s curiosity and offer self-directed learning opportunities through real-world experiences.

This organic approach to education informed our choice to work with the Oak Meadow curriculum as our foundation for academic learning. Oak Meadow is a nature-based and Waldorf-inspired curriculum that has been accredited and shifted to parallel public school learning milestones.

Using this curriculum allows our teachers to be inspired in their lesson creation by the children’s relationship to their natural surroundings, as well as the seasonal rhythms of the farm.

The Whole Child, The Whole Family

Each child is nurtured using a whole child education perspective to support their holistic development. Class sizes are small, with a maximum 1:8 student:teacher ratio.  This small group size allows for teachers to create flexible and adaptable learning experiences as children move through the program.

We believe that the blueprint for a human’s success and health in life is created in the early childhood years. Our hope is to guide children toward a life of wellness and financial freedom in their pursuit of passion and purpose.

At the culmination of each Compass Academy session, parents, extended family, friends, and farm team members are invited to partake in our recognition celebrations. Here, students shine as they share their learnings, friendships and personal growth with their families.

How often we hear it said that the future of our country depends upon the children of today, and how few people (comparatively) perceive the fact that the children of today are most marvelous creatures if given their freedom to express what they feel and know is in their power to do.” – Wee Wisdom, 1894

Overview

Immersed in farm and garden life, children will be given the space for self discovery and learning within a consistent daily rhythm. We use a Waldorf-inspired curriculum with weekly and monthly learning topics, while also following a Reggio Emilia approach of honoring and exploring the children’s interests in the moment. This is an outdoor program with farmhouse learning spaces for harsh weather days. Organic lunch and snacks are provided. You may choose a custom weekly schedule as available.

Food & Nutrition

How we eat plays a huge role in our moods, energy levels and overall health. Integrative nutrition and self care are important aspects of our curriculum, so it comes naturally that we want to provide nourishing meals during the program as part of the overall learning experience.

We provide lunch and snacks for the children. Lunch will usually consist of a warm soup in winter, or sandwiches in summertime, olives and hard boiled eggs, crackers, biscuits or muffins, and fresh fruit and vegetables. Snacks are generally fresh fruit and vegetables, a protein and something baked (or other carbohydrate like pretzels).

When we purchase snacks instead of making them homemade, we buy organic, paleo and/or gluten free brands. We value whole foods without refined sugars, flours and oils. If you have other special food requirements or allergies please let us know and we will aim to accommodate you. This means you don’t need to pack a lunch box!

Our rates are inclusive of food, learning materials and supplies. The following amounts are for the 2025-2026 session, from September 2, 2025 through June 5, 2026. The annual total can be paid in full or broken down into a deposit and monthly payments from September through March.

Clothing & Gear

We want your child to enjoy their time with us, and being warm and dry while we explore outdoors is essential to a positive experience! If you are new to dressing your child for outdoor weather every day, please know that there will be a learning curve, and it will get easier the more you practice it!

It is important to get into the habit of checking the weather as you help your child dress for the day. Please arrive for outdoor weather, we will help them adjust layers as the day progresses. In January and February, we begin our days indoors.

In addition to their backpack with water bottle, please make sure they wear the following clothing and gear each day that they join us:

  • Summer: Shorts and a T-shirt with close-toe sandals like Keens. Please pack an extra set of clothes, and a bathing suit (optional).
  • Spring/Fall: Check the weather each morning for temperature and rain. Dress in layers as the temperatures can change drastically throughout the day. Waterproof warm boots are great for these days. We like the LoneCone brand.
  • Rain Days: Rain pants and rain jacket, socks with tall waterproof boots.
  • Winter: Long underwear and insulated snow pants, fleece jacket mid layer and water resistant outer jacket (layers to remove if we get hot), wind proof winter hat and gloves, insulated waterproof boots, wool socks.

The Fine Print

We offer a 9:00am – 3:00pm weekday program as well as afternoon classes, which run from 1:00pm to 3:00pm most weekdays. We also offer a weekday afternoon garden program from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. Depending on the family’s schedule and enrichment needs, they may choose to participate in one or several of these programs.

Families are responsible for meeting all state homeschooling requirements and following all homeschool laws. Compass Academy is not an accredited school. At this time, we cannot accommodate students with special needs who require additional support.

Our goal is to work in partnership with families on the holistic development of each child. Only families who can commit to the complete session, and partnering in the homeschooling responsibilities, should inquire.

Positive Social Growth

We are committed to guiding children towards growing positive social and emotional skills. We understand that kids just need to be kids, and we give them plenty of space for this. As they begin to spend more time with their peers, there is space for strong guidance towards kindness, empathy and peaceful conflict resolution. Our program provides a strong framework for kids to learn how to build healthy relationships and grow in their emotional maturity. We also train our staff and teachers in Non-Violent Communication and Conscious Discipline. We are happy to talk through any of this with you while you are visiting us for your tour!
