Honey Bees

All about our honey bee pod

Honey Bees drift through the wildflower meadow, gathering sweetness from every bloom and delighting in the rich diversity around them. To us, this captures the spirit of the five- to seven-year-old beautifully — curious, capable, and ready to stretch their wings just a little wider.

At Compass Academy, our Honey Bees are gently guided through their transition into middle-childhood through thoughtfully designed hybrid learning experiences that support the potent social-emotional development happening at this age. This season of growth honors both freedom and focus. Learning remains dynamic and alive — a blend of table-top exploration and traveling, project-based adventures that move across our campus.

We preserve the magic of free play, while inviting deeper structure and collaboration. Games become more complex and strategic — like capture the flag — encouraging teamwork, resilience, and joyful competition. Our frequent wanders through the farm fields continue, but with new layers of inquiry woven in: What stories does the land tell? We notice erosion patterns, trace animal trails, study cloud formations, and observe the growth habits of trees. The landscape becomes both classroom and text.

Honey Bees also begin more formal — yet still delightfully engaging — mathematical exploration through Math Gnomes, where number sense is nurtured through hands-on discovery and playful challenge.

With growing confidence comes growing responsibility. Each child steps into weekly farm apprenticeships such as seedling caretaker, sweeper, librarian, or flock leader — learning that they are not just participants in our community, but essential contributors to it.

This is a season of sweet expansion — where wonder remains intact, and capability begins to bloom.

Honey Bees Curriculum

  • Social and Emotional Skills are one of our priorities. We introduce a new social or emotional skill each week through our "word of the week". Examples are Support, Listen, Encourage, Understanding, Peace, and Joyful. We also practice peaceful conflict resolution and conscious discipline with the children whenever necessary. Teachers are careful to maintain an environment of positive group growth and use nonviolent communication skills in our interactions with the children.
  • Cultural/Social Studies are explored through holidays, geographical awareness, current events and community engagement
  • Math and Arithmetic skills are nurtured through joyful Math Gnomes games, crafts and activities. We also use cooking and baking as a tool to facilitate geometry and volume learning.
  • Language Arts are developed through group and one-on-one learning time. Pre-reading skills are practiced through read alouds, alphabet recognition, vowel sounds discovery, introduction to consonants and group storytelling. We also encourage the kids to develop strong vocabulary skills through word walls and our "word of the week".
  • Science is all around us at the farm. We learn science primarily through observation at this age. Our daily rhythm brings us face-to-face with the life cycle of mammals, reptiles, birds and insects. Our nature hikes and outdoor learning spaces bring us into close awareness with the cycles of the season. Our gardening and foraging adventures supports learning about plants and biodiversity. And we are constantly asking questions about the land and the rocks and everything else we see! We do select some simple and fun science experiments to bring certain lessons to life.
  • Art and Design are introduced in a more formal way through handcrafts, a unit on ancient architecture, practical woodworking and a study of notable fine artists. We also encourage freedom of creative expression through DIY arts and crafts tables and time for children to explore and use materials at their own will.
